Free Magnets

If you are one of those people who like to fool around with magnets, why spend your hard earned money for something thats free almost everywhere?

My favorite place to get magnets is out of old broken and thrown away microwave ovens which can be found in abundance in almost every city and town. They can be found on the sides of roads in front of peoples houses or in free classifieds like craigslist, free cycle, or your local newspaper.

Removing magnets from microwave ovens is easy, all you need is a screwdriver, just take the cover off the oven and there you'll see one or two large magnets. Just prize them lose, don't worry about breaking the oven, its junk after all.

Microwave oven magnets can be quiet large depending on the size of the oven, they are also fairly strong, so don't allow them to snap together in your hands as its an easy way to raise a blood blister.

Another good place to find free magnets is off of old blown or broken speakers. Removing these magnets can be quiet hard compared to microwave ovens as they are glued on. You will need a large sharp butcher knife and a hammer,a lot of patience as well as practice, as you will most likely break a few before you get it right. Place the blade at the point where the magnet is glued on and strike it sharply with the hammer, if you do it right the magnet will fall right off in your hand.

Old broken hard drives from computers are yet another place to find free magnets. Unlike the microwave and speaker magnets, hard drive magnets tend to be small, but don't let the size fool you, pound for pound they are 10 times stronger than the others.

Remove the hard drive and unscrew the cover. Take out the drive disk (you can save the disk as they make dandy ornaments)and pop off the controller arms, you'll see one or two magnets glued on to a holder of some kind. Prize them lose with a knife or screwdriver.

I much prefer the hard drive magnets to any others as they are smaller and more fun to play with.
