Small Gardens
When most people think of gardens, they think they need a large area to grow things in. Thats true if you plan to sell at the local farmers market, or you're good at the art of canning and freezing. The thing is, most folks don't do those things. For the average person that wants fresh free vegetables all summer long all you need is 200 sq. ft. this is an area 20x10. Twenty feet long and 10 feet wide, and unless you live in an apartment, the majority of people can come up with this amount of space. In a garden that size you can put two rows of tomato's (three plants in each row)two rows of cucumber, two rows of cauliflower, and still have room for a couple of squash plants, or you could use the whole area and plant a single crop of whatever veggie you liked best. I once had an area 10x10 and grew 6 tomato plants and got several bushels of delicious fresh tomato's which taste a million times better than what you can buy in a store, plus I had plenty to give away to family and friends. Another great thing about small gardens is they are very good on water conservation. This can be handy in times or drought. A good tip is to put a barrel under the downspout of your gutter system or if you don't have gutters, just watch it the next time it rains hard and see where most of the water is draining from your roof and put it there. Also most small gardens can usually be kept close to the house and can be reached with a single length of hose. |
